Microsoft Excel – Summing times that are greater than 24 hours

If you try to add together 08:00, 10:00 and 08:00 hours in Excel, you will get the result 02:00; the hours over 24 are ignored.

To get the answer 26:00, you need to format the cell which contains the total time. First select the cell containing the formula.

In Excel 2003 or earlier:

  1. Click Format – Cells. The Format Cells dialog box will be displayed.
  2. Select the Number tab.
  3. From the Category list, click Custom.
  4. In the box labelled Type, type [h]:mm.

In Excel 2007 or Excel 2010:

  1. On the Home tab, in the Number group, click the Quick Dialog Box Launcher. The Format Cells dialog box will be displayed.
  2. Select the Number tab.
  3. From the Category list, click Custom.
  4. In the box labelled Type, type [h]:mm.

I am a trainer of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Crystal Reports. I have called my blog "If Only I'd Known That...." because I hear it so many times in training sessions. In fact, if only I had a £100 (or 150 Aussie dollars)for every time someone says "If only I'd known that." ....
