Microsoft Word – my Tab key won’t work for going to the next level in outline numbering

When training Word 2010 outline numbering recently, one learner was unable to use her Tab key to get to the next level of numbers. This foiled me for a while but I decided it must be something in the settings. If using Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options; if using Word 2010, click File – Options. Click Proofing, then click the AutoCorrect Options button. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

Towards the bottom of the box, put a tick in Set left- and first- indent with tabs and backspaces check box. Click OK twice. The Tab key should now work to go the next level in outline numbering.

About jdonbavand

I am a trainer of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Crystal Reports. I have called my blog "If Only I'd Known That...." because I hear it so many times in training sessions. In fact, if only I had a £100 (or 150 Aussie dollars)for every time someone says "If only I'd known that." ....
