Microsoft Excel – referencing a cell in a chart title

When working with charts in Microsoft Excel, you may want the title to reference a cell in your spreadsheet so that if the information changes in that cell, the chart title will also change. Chart Title1In the example above, I may want to change the city I am plotting data for.

To do so, ensure you have selected to have a Chart Title from either the Chart Tools Layout tab, if you are working in Excel 2007 or Excel 2010, or from Add Chart Element on the Chart Tools Design tab if you are using Microsoft Excel 2013.

Click in the Chart Title, then go to the formula bar and type =A1 or whatever the cell reference is of the title you want including.

Excel Chart Title

The Chart Title will now display the text in the referenced cell. If the information in the referenced cell changes, so will the chart title.

I am a trainer of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Crystal Reports. I have called my blog "If Only I'd Known That...." because I hear it so many times in training sessions. In fact, if only I had a £100 (or 150 Aussie dollars)for every time someone says "If only I'd known that." ....
