Microsoft Project – Displaying a comment on a split task on the Gantt Chart

When training Microsoft Project earlier this week, I was asked whether it was feasible to display a comment on the Gantt Chart by split tasks, to explain why the split had occurred.

One approach would be to use a text box near to the Split. I then decided to create a Text1 column – right-click over a column heading, click Insert Column and select Text1. I then double-clicked on the column heading to rename it Reason for Split.

Type in the reason for any tasks that have splits in them.

Then on the Gantt Chart Tools Format tab, in the Bar Styles group, click the Format dropdown and click Bar Styles.

Click in the Task cell, then towards the bottom of the dialog box, select the Text tab.

From the dropdown by Top select Reason for Split. Click OK.

You should now see the reasons for each split task displayed above the task.

About jdonbavand

I am a trainer of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Crystal Reports. I have called my blog "If Only I'd Known That...." because I hear it so many times in training sessions. In fact, if only I had a £100 (or 150 Aussie dollars)for every time someone says "If only I'd known that." ....
