Microsoft Excel 2013 and 2016 – automatic currency conversion

A client wants to automatically convert £ to $ and £ to €. You used to be able to do this using MSN MoneyCentral straight from within Excel but this now longer seems to be readily available. However, the below worked for me.

Go to Data – Get External Data – From Web. The New Web Query dialog box will be displayed.

In the Address box, type then press Go. Depending on your Internet connection speed, you may have to be patient and you may also get some script error messages but persevere and you will eventually see some red arrows in yellow boxes next to various tables.

Because the client only needs USD, GBP and Eur, I clicked the button next to that table – see above – so that it now has a blue tick.

Click Import. It will ask where you want it imported and will then do so.

To get the most up-to-date rates you will need to click Refresh All.

I am a trainer of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Crystal Reports. I have called my blog "If Only I'd Known That...." because I hear it so many times in training sessions. In fact, if only I had a £100 (or 150 Aussie dollars)for every time someone says "If only I'd known that." ....
